Draft Law on Artificial Reproductive Technologies Passed 1st Reading on May 22

The proposed draft law concerning Artificial Reproductive Technologies passed first reading at the legislature on May 22, 2006. The purpose of the proposed law aims to promote the artificial reproductive technologies in Taiwan, and also protect as well as balance the interests of three parties, i.e. infertile couples, children conceived through artificial means, and donors, the relevant Committee of the Legislative Yuan reviewing the proposed draft indicated. The proposed law confines the use of artificial reproductive technologies to married couples and requires written consent of the couple each time artificial insemination procedure is performed. Children conceived through artificial means will be considered legitimate. The bill will proceed to its second and third readings and is excepted to be completed in the near future.
